How Anxiety Creates Physical Pain
While understanding condition of stress related chest pain, we have to look at the "fight or flight" response. This is your body’s ancient survival mechanism. When you are anxious, your brain signals your adrenal glands to release hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones cause several things to happen at once:- Muscle Tension: Your muscles tighten up to prepare for action. The muscles between your ribs (intercostal muscles) can spasm, causing a sharp or dull ache.
- Rapid Heart Rate: Your heart beats faster to pump blood to your muscles. This increased workload can sometimes feel like pressure or pounding in the chest.
- Rapid Breathing: You may start taking short, shallow breaths. Over-breathing (hyperventilation) changes the carbon dioxide levels in your blood, which can cause tingling and chest discomfort.
Anxiety vs. Heart Attack: How to Tell the Difference
One of the biggest challenges with chest pain anxiety symptoms is that they can mimic a heart attack. However, there are usually subtle differences in how the pain feels and how it starts.| Feature | Anxiety/Panic Attack | Heart Attack |
| Onset | Often happens during stress or suddenly during a panic attack. | Often happens during physical exertion (like climbing stairs). |
| Pain Type | Sharp, stabbing, or localized to one small area. | Pressure, squeezing, or a feeling of a "heavy weight" on the chest. |
| Duration | Usually peaks within 10 minutes and then fades. | Pain is persistent, stays the same, or gets worse over time. |
| Location | Stays in the chest area. | Pain often "radiates" or moves to the left arm, neck, jaw, or back. |
What Does a Panic Attack Feel Like?
A panic attack chest pain like episode can be particularly intense. It can all come on out of nowhere, even when you are not feeling consciously stressed. Along with the chest discomfort, people often report:- A feeling of "doom" or that something terrible is about to happen.
- Shaking or trembling.
- Sweating and chills.
- A choking sensation.
