Generic Ziagen is indicated in combination with other drugs, to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Generic Ziagen will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS; however, it helps keep HIV from reproducing and appears to slow down the destruction of the immune system. Generic Abacavir may reduce the amount of HIV in the blood and increase the number of CD4 cells (T-cells) in the blood. HIV is the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Generic Ziagen Contraindications and Drug Interactions

Generic Ziagen is contraindicated in patients, with a prior history of hypersensitivity to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drug or any component of this formulation.
Generic Ziac should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment conditions.

- Changes in body appearance (such as weight gain or loss around the waist and/or face)
- A heart condition such as low blood pressure, heart block, a pacemaker or heart failure, or any other heart problem.
- Numbness or tingling
- Liver or kidney disease

There are a number of medications that interact with Generic Ziagen. It is important to take the doctor's counsel if you are taking any of the following.

- Alcohol
- Methadone
- Ribavirin

The usual recommended dose of Generic Ziagen for adults weighing 132 pounds or more is 200 milligrams every 12 hours. Those weighing less than 132 pounds usually take 125 milligrams every 12 hours.
