Generic Tegretol is indicated to treat seizure (convulsion) in certain types of epilepsy. Generic Tegretol(Carbamazepine) also treats nerve-related pain such as trigeminal neuralgia, or the pain associated with shingles.Carbamazepine may also be used to control certain mood problems, and is used for manic-depressive illness in some people.

Generic Tegretol is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or any component of this formulation.

Generic Tegretol should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment conditions.

Alcohol abuse
Anemia
Behavioral problems
Glaucoma
Heart or blood vessel disease
Problems with urination

The usual recommended dosage of Generic Tegretol for seizures is, 200 milligrams (1 tablet or 2 chewable or extended-release tablets) taken twice daily or 1 teaspoon 4 times a day.

Generic for Tegretol and Pregnancy

Generic Tegretol has not been studied in pregnant women. However, there have been reports of babies having low birth weight, small head size, skull and facial defects, underdeveloped fingernails, and delays in growth when their mothers had taken carbamazepine in high doses during pregnancy. Therefore, the use of carbamazepine during pregnancy should be discussed with your doctor.

Generic Tegretol passes into the breast milk, and in some cases the baby may receive enough of it to cause unwanted effects. In animal studies, carbamazepine has affected the growth and appearance of the nursing babies.
