Indications

Premarin is indicated for the replacement of estrogens. Estrogen, a hormone produced by the body is needed for normal growth and development of female sex organs and for functions such as bearing children. During menopause, the body's production of estrogen is decreased. Estrogen replacement is used for symptoms associated with menopause including feelings of warmth in the face, neck and chest and the sudden intense episodes of heat and sweating known as hot flashes. Premarin is also used in the treatment of breast cancer in postmenopausal women and breast and prostate cancer in men.

Premarin Contraindications and Drug Interactions

Premarin is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Premarin should not be taken by patients who have history of following ailment conditions

Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
Estrogen-dependent neoplasia
Deep vein thrombosis
Pulmonary embolism
Myocardial infarction
Liver dysfunction or disease

Premarin Dosage

The usual recommended dosage of Premarin for hot flashes associated with menopause is 0.3 milligrams daily, taken continuously or in cycles such as 25 days on Premarin and 5 days off.

Premarin Adverse Effects

Some of the most serious Premarin side Effects include breakthrough bleeding and spotting, breast enlargement, tenderness, unusual discharge or milk production, chest pain and confusion, forgetfulness.

Premarin and Geriatric

Elderly people are especially sensitive to the effects of estrogens. This may increase the chance of side effects during treatment, especially stroke, invasive breast cancer, and memory problems.
