Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Microzide) works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten vessels, so blood flows more smoothly. Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Microzide) is a diuretic. Diuretics increase the amount of urine passed, which causes the body to lose water and salt.
