Generic Mevacor is indicated for the treatment of lowering overall blood cholesterol. Lovastatin (Generic Mevacor) inhibits the production of cholesterol by the Liver. Overall blood cholesterol as well as blood LDL cholesterol level can be lowered using Generic Mevacor. LDL cholesterol is believed to the "bad" cholesterol that is primarily responsible for the development of coronary artery disease.

The usual recommended dosage of Generic Mevacor for hypercholesterolemia is 20 milligrams once a day, taken with the evening meal. The doctor may start at 10 milligrams a day if only a small reduction in cholesterol is needed. The maximum recommended dose is 80 milligrams per day, taken as a single dose or divided into smaller doses, as determined by the doctor.
