Generic Lotrel is indicated to lower blood pressure. Amlodipine and Benazepril (Generic Lotrel) is a combination of two drugs used to lower blood pressure. Amlodipine is in a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard. Benazepril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly.

Generic Lotrel is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Generic Lotrel should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment conditions.

Substitute salts which contain potassium
There are a number of medications that interact with Generic Lotrel. It is important to take the doctor's counsel if you are taking any of the following.
Autoimmune disease (such as lupus), or suppressed immune function
Previous swelling of the tongue, face, or lips with difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or tightening of the throat (angioedema)
Bone marrow disease
Heart or blood vessel disease
Liver disease
Low blood pressure
Kidney disease

The usual recommended dosage of Generic Lotrel for hypertension is 10 milligrams, once a day. Regular total dosages range from 20 to 40 milligrams per day either taken in a single dose or divided into 2 equal doses. The maximum dose is 80 milligrams per day.

Some of the most serious Generic Lotrel side Effects include decreased amount of urine passed, difficulty breathing, or swallowing, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting spells, redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, skin rash and itching.

Generic for Lotrel and Pregnancy
When used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters, ACE inhibitors can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. When pregnancy is detected, generic Lotrel should be discontinued as soon as possible.

It is also not known whether Generic Lotrel passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

The safety and effectiveness of Generic Lotrel in pediatric patients have not been established.
Generic for Lotrel and Geriatric
If you are over 65 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from benazepril (an ACE inhibitor). You may require a lower dose of the medication.
