Indications

Generic Lipitor is indicated for the treatment of blocking the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in your body. Atrovastatin (Generic Lipitor) reduces the amount of LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood. This is important in reducing the risk of hardening arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
Generic Lipitor is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Generic Lipitor should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment conditions.
A chronic muscular disease
Require major surgery or
Have a blood disorder.
There are a number of medications that interact with Generic Lipitor. It is important to take the doctor's counsel if you are taking any of the following.
Cyclosporine
Gemfibrozil
Niacin
Clarithromycin
Erythromycin
Fluconazole
Digoxin
Cholestyramine

The usual recommended dosage of Generic Lipitor for hypercholesterolemia is 10 or 20 milligrams once a day. (The doctor may start with 40 milligrams daily if the LDL levels need to be reduced by more than 45 percent). The maximum recommended daily dose is 80 milligrams.
Some of the most serious Generic Lipitor side Effects include dark yellow or brown urine, decreased urination, difficulty passing urine, fever, muscle pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness, redness, blistering and peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth.

Studies suggests use of Generic Lipitor will cause birth defects if it is taken during pregnancy. Cholesterol is very important for the proper development of a baby. Do not take Lipitor if you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy.
It is not known whether Lipitor passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
