Indications
Rejection of Kidney transplants, Rheumatoid arthritis
Imuran is indicated to prevent the rejection of kidney transplants. Imuran is also indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the body attacks its own joints, causing pain and swelling. Azathioprine (Imuran) works by weakening the body's immune system so it will not attack the transplanted organ or the joints.
Imuran Contraindications and Drug Interactions
Imuran is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Imuran interacts with a number of medication. It is important to take the doctor's counsel if you are taking any of the following
Allopurinol
Antithyroid agents
Carbamazepine
Clozapine
Medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
Medicines that suppress the immune system
Zidovudine
Hydrocortisone
Imuran Dosage

The usual recommended dosage of Imuran for Rheumatoid Arthritis is 1.0 mg/kg (50 to 100 mg) given as a single dose or on a twice daily schedule.
Imuran Adverse Effects
Some of the most serious Imuran side Effects include dark yellow or brown urine
Black, tarry stools, diarrhea, fever; chills; sore throat, lower back pain, joint pain, mouth sores, muscle pain, pain or difficulty passing urine, stomach pain and swelling of the feet or legs.

Imuran and Pregnancy
Imuran is not recommended during pregnancy, as it may harm the fetus or may even result in death of the unborn. Consult your doctor before taking this medication, if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Imuran passes into breast milk and could affect the nursing infant. Breastfeeding mothers should consult doctor before taking this medication.
Imuran and Pediatric
Studies do not indicate any overall difference in the safety and effectiveness of Imuran with relation to age.
Imuran and Geriatric
The safety and effectiveness of Imuran in geriatric patients have not been established.
