Generic Epivir (3TC) is an antiviral drug called a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor or NRTI. Lamivudine (Generic Epivir (3TC)) is used to treat infections due to hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). When used for hepatitis B, lamivudine can slow the damage to your liver. When used for HIV, Generic Epivir (3TC) may reduce the amount of HIV in the blood and increase the number of CD4 cells (T-cells) in the blood.
Generic for Epivir (3tc) Contraindications and Drug Interactions
Generic Epivir (3TC) is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Generic Epivir (3TC) should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment conditions.
Kidney disease
Liver disease
Pancreatitis
Problems with your muscles or
Problems with blood counts.

The usual recommended dosage of Generic Epivir (3TC) for HIV infection is 300 mg daily, administered as either 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg once daily, in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

Some of the most serious Generic Epivir (3TC) side Effects include breathing difficulties or shortness of breath, changes in body appearance (weight gain around waist and/or face), dizziness, muscle aches, pains, or weakness, pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands or feet, passing out or fainting, severe vomiting and diarrhea.

It is not known whether Generic Epivir (3TC) passes into breast milk and what effect it may have on a nursing baby. To prevent transmission of the virus to uninfected babies, it is recommended that HIV-positive mothers not breast-feed.

The safety and effectiveness of Generic Epivir (3TC) in pediatric patients have not been established.
Generic for Epivir (3tc) and Geriatric
Although appropriate studies on the relationship of age to the effects of Generic Epivir (3TC) have not been performed in the geriatric population, no geriatrics-specific problems have been documented to date. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related renal function impairment, which may require a dosage adjustment in patients receiving this medication.
