Generic Dilantin is an anticonvulsant used to treat seizures in certain types of epilepsy. Phenytoin (Generic Dilantin) reduces the maximal activity of brain stem centers responsible for the tonic phase of tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures.
Generic for Dilantin Contraindications and Drug Interactions
Generic Dilantin is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class including phenytoin or other hydantoins or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Generic Dilantin should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment conditions.
- Recurrent infections - chronic neurologic disease - chronic liver disease or cirrhosis - chronic kidney disease - recurrent infections.
There are a number of medications that interact with Generic Dilantin. It is important to take the doctor's counsel if you are taking any of the following.
- Digoxin - carbamasepine - Clonazepam - Corticosteroids - Cyclosporine - Disopyramide - Doxycycline. - Estrogens - Felodipine - Levodopa - Lidocaine - Methadone - Mexiletine - Paroxetine
Generic for Dilantin Dosage
The following information just highlights the general average dosage of GenericDilantin The usual recommended dosage of Generic Dilantin for seizures is 100 mg (125 mg of the suspension) t.i.d.; adjust dosage at 7- to 10-day intervals until seizures are controlled. For maintenance therapy, 300-400 mg/day of Generic Dilantin may be required in some.
Generic for Dilantin Adverse Effects
Some of the most serious Generic Dilantin side Effects include chest pain or tightness, palpitations, confusion, nervousness, hostility, or other behavioral changes (especially in children or elderly patients), dark yellow or brown urine, difficulty breathing, wheezing or shortness of breath or double vision or uncontrollable and rapid eye movement. Generic for Dilantin and Pregnancy

Generic Dilantin appears in breast milk. Therefore, it is not recommended to continue Generic Dilantin while breast feeding a baby.
