Indications

Augmentin is indicated for the treatment of different types of bacterial infections such as tonsillitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, urinary tract infections and the infection of skin. Augmentin is also prescribed for the treatment of gonorrhea. Augmentin works by blocking the formation of bacterial cell wall rendering bacteria unable to multiply and spread.

Augmentin Contraindications and Drug Interactions

Augmentin is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this drug, medications that belong to this class of drugs or had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
Augmentin should not be taken by patients who have a history of the following ailment condition

Cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction

Eythromycin
Disulfiram
Anticoagulants

Augmentin Dosage

The usual recommended dosage of Augmentin for Bacterial infections is one 500-mg tablet of Augmentin every 12 hours or one 250-mg tablet of Augmentin every 8 hours. For more severe infections and infections of the respiratory tract, the dose should be one 875-mg tablet of Augmentin every 12 hours or one 500-mg tablet of Augmentin every 8 hours.

Augmentin Adverse Effects

Some of the most serious Augmentin side Effects include difficulty breathing, wheezing, dark yellow or brown urine, dizziness, fever or chills, sore throat, headache,
Increased thirst, pain or difficulty passing urine, redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, and seizures (convulsions).

Augmentin and Pregnancy

Augmentin passes into human milk and must be avoided while breast feeding.

Augmentin doesn't indicate any specific problems in older patients. However, elderly patients are more likely to have an age-related decrease in renal function, which may require an adjustment in dosage in patients receiving Augmentin.
